Real-time Compliance & Sustainability for Biofuels Industry

Real-time Environmental Management

Environmental reporting and record-keeping is an operational burden yet a requirement. It is essential to have tools that continuously validate records, provide automatic alerts on compliance risks or events and provide notification of being back in compliance. Pavilion’s solution to these needs is an automated data collection, validation and accumulation system with real-time connectivity to control and environmental systems; browser-based access to confirm, check and comment on today’s events; and an ability to notate and reconstruct downtime events. It is expandable and capable of performing a flexible range of environmental calculations consistent with local permit requirements and preparing record-keeping data as automatically as specified, constantly validated and consistently prepared.

Software CEM

Continuous emissions monitoring requirements can be satisfied through traditional means with a certified hardware analyzer installed on a thermal oxidizer or boiler stack. Unfortunately, due to the harsh environmental conditions in the stack and the fact that the sensor location is high above the operational floor, these instruments have a tradition of troublesome and costly operation. Generally, they need to function 95% of the time and be supported by a certified analyzer technician.

While these needs are challenging in most ethanol facilities, many plants have installed the lower cost, lower risk and scalable Pavilion Software CEM application. It provides inherent safety advantages in hazardous, corrosive and confined environments. There are no special hardware enclosures or potentially dangerous calibration gases required. A Software CEM follows the EPA’s published performance requirements for predictive emissions monitoring systems (PEMS). Each operational sensor used to predict current emissions is validated every day, and if necessary, alarmed and reconstructed every minute to provide an accurate, readily certifiable current emissions value (based on over 500 successful relative accuracy test audits).

Utilities Management

Some ethanol or biofuels facilities are supported by an integrated energy or utility system, which may include multi-fuel boilers, turbines, combined heat and power, chilled water, parallel air compressors or other examples of complex, integrated, utility generating equipment.  Pavilion’s energy and environmental modeling solutions are used to reduce energy costs per ton of utility generated through optimal dispatch, fuel or economic optimization with real-time equipment constraint enforcement. These systems have reduced energy costs 3-6% per ton of utility generated.
